WSD junior high students celebrate music at 'Band Blast'

Winnipeg School Division junior high school students participated in “Band Blast” on Tuesday, May 2. The recently revived event took took place at Gordon Bell bringing together Grade 7 to 9 students from 13 WSD schools to play exciting and challenging band repertoire together.

Under the direction of Kelvin High School Band Director John Martens, students spent the day learning three different song selections, participating in sectional rehearsals led by band directors from throughout the division and getting opportunities to get to know each other. 

The day was capped off with an excellent performance for families and friends.

Julia Dacyon, a Grade 8 student from Ecole Lansdowne said, “At first it was scary, but everyone from all the other schools is so nice. The sound we created is better than I could have imagined!”

The event was a huge success, with students already buzzing about playing in this event again next year.
