The west wing of Technical Vocational High School (Tec-Voc) has officially opened to the students in the school’s Aviation and Aerospace Technologies, Machining and Welding Programs after a major expansion and renovation.

The 5,800 sq. foot expansion includes a new welding shop and a composites classroom and lab; as well as a 5,000 sq. foot renovation of the previous welding and machine shop, along with three classrooms. The old welding shop has been converted into an Aerospace Manufacturing Centre.1P5A1739.JPG

Department Head and Aviation and Aerospace teacher Drew Tapley shared how excited his students were to get into the new space and how the expansion and renovation provide more opportunities for high school and post-high school students to gain in-demand skills and career options.

Students who successfully complete the Aviation and Aerospace Technology program are qualified to work with companies like Boeing and Magellan Aerospace. Potential careers include gas turbine technologist, aircraft maintenance engineer, aviation machinist, non-destructive tester, and composite fabrication. Tec-Voc is a leader in Aerospace programming since it began offering it to students in 1996.

“Winnipeg School Division is proud of our partnerships within the community and the role we play in helping students achieve their full potential,” said Tamara Kuly, chair, Winnipeg School Division board of trustees. “The students who are studying aviation and aerospace technologies in this newly expanded building are learners engaged in deep and sophisticated thinking that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics to serve them in their future careers.”
