Intramurals

Every year, intramurals are run during the lunch hour.  They kind of vary year-to-year based on the interests of the kids.  But the staples are The Victoria Albert Cup which is our annual soccer intramural, and March Madness which is our basketball 4 vs 4 intramural.  The Vic Al cup is usually in October; March Madness is in March, obviously (although this year it will be later lol).
Then, depending on the kids' interests, other intramurals we've done in the past are curling, Cannon Crushers, badminton, scooter basketball, gymnastics, and dance.

Soccer

We have two soccer tournaments at the beginning of the year.  One for grade 5 students and one for grade 6 students.  The tournaments are at the end of September/early October.  They are both half day tournaments vs other schools.

We also play in the Inner-City Soccer League which is a league of mainly WSD Inner City Schools, played indoors at the University of Winnipeg.  We play 6 games over the course of October to March.  These games are only for grade 6 students.

Volleyball

For volleyball, we have a yearly tournament at the end of November/early December for grade 5 and 6 students.  Just like the soccer tournament, it is a half day tournament vs 2 or 3 other WSD schools.  The schools we play against and the location vary year-to-year.

Basketball

We play in the Inner-City Basketball league which is a carbon copy of the Inner-City Soccer league expect we play out of Sport For Life building and games run from January to March.  This is for grade 6 students.

Badminton

This year we will be playing in a badminton tournament for the first time, probably ever.  I'll be taking 14 grade 5/6 students to the tournament.  Again, this is a half-day tournament against various other schools within the division.

WSD Fit Run

We also participate in the annual WSD Fit Run which runs in early June and is open to grade 4-6 students.  This is a 2KM run which students have to qualify for in order to go to.  We train most of May during the lunch hour for this.  The majority of WSD elementary school participate in the run.  Students run against other students from the division from their grade level.  This is a pretty big event.

Ultimate Football

Lastly, we play ultimate football, also in June.  This is basically ultimate frisbee but with a football.  There is no tackling involved whatsoever.  This is open to grade 6 students, and we play against other WSD elementary schools.

Note:

The "tournaments" are non-competitive.  We don't keep track of score, and teams aren't eliminated if they lose a game.  They are friendly, fun games.  I guess we use the word "tournament" for a lack of a better word.
