Intramurals
Each year, we offer a variety of intramural activities during the lunch hour. These programs change slightly from year to year based on student interest, but a few staples remain consistent.
Our most popular intramurals include The Victoria Albert Cup, our annual soccer intramural held in October, and March Madness, a 4‑on‑4 basketball intramural that typically runs in March (although this year it will take place a bit later).
In addition to these core activities, we have also offered intramurals such as curling, Cannon Crushers, badminton, scooter basketball, gymnastics, and dance, depending on student interest.
Soccer
At the beginning of each school year, we host two half‑day soccer tournaments: one for Grade 5 students and one for Grade 6 students. These tournaments usually take place in late September or early October and are played against other schools.
Grade 6 students also participate in the Inner‑City Soccer League, which includes primarily WSD inner‑city schools. Games are played indoors at the University of Winnipeg. Teams play six games over the course of October through March.
Volleyball
Our annual volleyball tournament takes place in late November or early December and is open to both Grade 5 and Grade 6 students. Like the soccer tournaments, this is a half‑day event where students play against two or three other WSD schools. Participating schools and locations vary from year to year.
Basketball
Grade 6 students have the opportunity to play in the Inner‑City Basketball League, which operates similarly to the Inner‑City Soccer League. Games are held at the Sport for Life building and run from January through March.
Badminton
This year, we are excited to participate in a badminton tournament—possibly for the first time ever. Fourteen Grade 5 and 6 students will attend a half‑day tournament competing against other schools within the division.
WSD Fit Run
We also take part in the annual WSD Fit Run, held in early June and open to students in Grades 4–6. This is a 2‑kilometre run that students must qualify for in order to participate. Training takes place during lunch hour throughout the month of May.
Most WSD elementary schools participate, and students race against others from across the division within their grade level. This is a large and exciting event for everyone involved.
Ultimate Football
In June, Grade 6 students also participate in ultimate football, a non‑contact sport similar to ultimate frisbee but played with a football. Games are played against other WSD elementary schools, with no tackling involved.
Important Note
All tournaments are non‑competitive. Scores are not kept, and teams are not eliminated if they lose a game. The focus is on participation, sportsmanship, and having fun!
