Heart Garden
May 25, 2021
On June 14, 2017, Elder Garry Robson did a presentation about Aboriginal Identity and Reconciliation for the Aboriginal Studies students at WAEC. Following this presentation, students held a smudge in the Circle Garden and created a Heart Garden as a legacy to the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada, former students of Indian Residential Schools and their families.
Heart Gardens honour residential school survivors and their families, as well as the legacy of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Each heart represents the memory of a child lost to the residential school system, and the act of planting represents that individual's commitment to finding their place in reconciliation. Last year, more than 6500 hearts were planted in gardens across Canada.
