Winnipeg School Division Adult Learning Centres (Adult Learning and Literacy)
Our Adult Learning Centre locations offers free registration to students from anywhere in Manitoba. At the ALC locations, we follow the regular school schedule and offer and offer small class sizes and you are able to register at anytime through our continuous intake process. Students attending our ALCs have access to the supports, services and opportunities offered at the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre’s main campus.

Courses are delivered in 10-week blocks, creating four entry points throughout the year which allows students the flexibility to join the program when they are ready. The courses are taught with a small student-to-teacher ratio.

Students attending the 180 Main Street ALC are looking to complete Grade 12 courses to graduate, complete prerequisites for post-secondary or move to employment quickly. Students can also earn credits through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, acknowledging skills and experiences gained outside the traditional classroom. Applied Family Studies was added as a course leading directly to employment for our students in the areas of childcare or as educational assistants.

Courses offered include: Grade 12 Essential Math; Grade 12 English Comprehensive; Grade 12 Global Issues; Grade 12 English Transactional; Grade 12 Applied Family Studies; Grade 12 Family Studies; Grade 12 Life/Work Transition; Grade 12 Psychology.

The Kaakiyow ALC is located in the Lord Selkirk Park area in Turtle Island Community Centre. offers a full range of Grade 10–12 courses with multiple entry points, establishing clear pathways for students to achieve their Mature High School Diploma, transition into the workforce, improve employment prospects, upgrade academic credentials for post-secondary education, or connect to broader community opportunities.

Kaakiyow offers a safe, welcoming, and accessible learning environment. Small class sizes help reduce anxiety and allow teachers to provide more one-to-one support. Long-standing staff have developed strong, trusting relationships with students, families, and the broader community, an important foundation for student engagement and success

Shaughnessy Park - WSD ALC

The Shaughnessy Park ALC is in the Gilbert Park area inside of Shaughnessy Park School. At Shaughnessy, we offer a full range of Grade 10–12 courses with multiple entry points, establishing clear pathways for students to achieve their Mature High School Diploma, transition into the workforce, improve employment prospects, upgrade academic credentials for post-secondary education, or connect to broader community opportunities.

The location provides easy access for community members and for parents with children attending Shaughnessy Park School. Its proximity to Gilbert Park, as well as to neighbourhoods in northwest Winnipeg and the North End, support adult learners in the community. 

Courses offered include: English Comprehensive Grade 10-12; Essential Math Grade 10-12; Psychology Grade 12; Current Topics in Indigenous Studies; Information Communication Technology A/B Grade 10; Family Studies 40S; Visual Art 40S.



Taking Charge! of Academics - WSD ALC

Taking Charge! is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides programs and services to single parents and women who are working towards economic independence.  Taking Charge! provides intake, assessment, planning and goal-setting, personal development, pre-employment programs, and academic upgrading with the goal of post-secondary training and/or employment.

The organization houses Taking Charge! Of Academics (TCA), which is a program delivered in partnership with Winnipeg School Division - Winnipeg Adult Education Centre.  The program is delivered in four terms with intakes in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer and offers Manitoba high school credit courses in English, Math, Family Studies and Active Healthy Lifestyles.  Upon completion of one or two 10-week terms in Taking Charge! of Academics, participants usually transfer to another adult education centre, unless they are ready to enter college or the workforce.
