WAEC Launches Students into the Future with Drone Pilot Certification
May 28, 2026
The Winnipeg Adult Education Centre (WAEC) is proud to showcase the success of its innovative Drone Pilot Training Program, a hands-on learning experience that is opening new career pathways for adult learners in Winnipeg. Delivered in partnership with the Manitoba Construction Sector Council (MCSC), this program demonstrates WAEC’s ongoing commitment to providing relevant, skill-based training aligned with emerging industries.
At WAEC, education goes beyond the classroom—students are equipped with practical, industry-recognized skills that lead dire
ctly to employment opportunities. The Drone Pilot Training Program is a powerful example of this approach. Through a blend of classroom instruction and applied flight training, students learn the fundamentals of drone operations, aviation safety, and real-world applications in sectors such as construction, surveying, and public safety.
As part of this program, students prepare for and complete their Basic Drone Pilot Certification, an important credential that enables them to legally and safely operate drones in Canada. The program’s success is evident: all participating students successfully passed their certification exams and are now officially certified drone pilots.
A key contributor to the program’s success is instructor Mabini Pagtakhan, whose expertise and passion for teaching have had a lasting impact on students. As a drone instructor connected with the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, Pagtakhan brings industry knowledge, hands-on experience, and strong community partnerships into the classroom. Her approach emphasizes mentorship and applied learning. Students not only acquire technical skills but also gain confidence flying drones in real-life scenarios under expert guidance.
The Drone Pilot Training Program is delivered in collaboration with the Manitoba Construction Sector Council, an organization dedicated to strengthening the province’s workforce through training and innovation. This partnership ensures that WAEC students receive up-to-date, industry-relevant instruction that reflects the growing role of drone technology in construction and infrastructure development. Drone technology is increasingly used in construction for tasks like site mapping, progress tracking, and safety inspections—making certified drone pilots a valuable asset in today’s workforce.
WAEC’s Drone Pilot Training Program exemplifies how adult education can adapt to a rapidly changing job market. By combining technical training with industry partnerships, the program empowers students to pursue careers in cutting-edge fields and to apply their learning in meaningful, real-world contexts.
Graduates of the program leave with more than a certification—they gain confidence, practical experience, and a clear pathway toward employm
ent in high-demand sectors.
Winnipeg Adult Education Centre continues to lead the way in adult learning by offering programs that are innovative, inclusive, and directly connected to career success. The Drone Pilot Training Program is just one example of how WAEC is helping students reach new heights—literally and figuratively.
