With the strength of stone and as rooted as a tree, Rockwood School has been growing young minds and building community for 75 years.

Rockwood School proudly celebrates its 75th anniversary in the heart of Grant Park this spring. Located near Pakan Town (also known as Rooster Town), a historic Métis settlement, Rockwood has become the neighbourhood's cornerstone since its doors opened in 1950.

As part of the celebrations, students will engage with the school's history through special activities, including opening a 25-year time capsule from the 50th anniversary held in 1999, and creating a new capsule for the future.

“It's important for students to learn about the history of Rockwood School and how the world and schools have changed over the last 75 years,” says Principal Angela Perez.  “We learn from past mistakes so that we can do better, while at the same time, celebrate the progress we have made in accepting and loving people from all walks of life. “

The school is also launching initiatives focused on environmental stewardship, such as installing a rooftop beehive to help students learn about sustainability.

“We are helping them discover their role and responsibility in making the world a little better for all, by being kind to each other, to the environment, and most importantly to themselves,” says Perez.

Rockwood's parent council is also organizing community events to bring together current and former families, staff, and community members to recognize the milestone. A social is planned at Corydon Community Centre on May 3, and a community picnic on the school grounds on June 5, which includes school tours, games, a “dancing through the decades” performance, and more.
