LAC Program Room 21 Mr. Beach

February 5, 2021

LEARNING ASSISTANCE CENTRE (LAC) PROGRAM:

The LAC is a Special Education Program.  It is an intensive, caring, structured and individualized learning environment with a ratio of 10 students to 3 staff.  The focus of the program is to provide both Behaviour Management Programming, as well as Academic Support.  Students attend classes from 9:00 am till 2:30 pm with a supervised lunch period.  The students are provided with individualized work assignments at their grade level in all of the core subject areas (Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies). They also participate in Physical Education, as well as the Practical Arts (shops) program at St. Johns High School.

The academic expectation for each of the students is that they complete their school work for the week.  As each student completes their assignments it is recorded by the teacher and also by the student.  Completing all of the assigned work and having appropriate behaviour for the week provides the student with the opportunity to participate in "PAY DAY FRIDAYS" (field trips to participate in billiards, fishing, archery, etc.).  These outings are an integral part of the program, to reward students that have demonstrated appropriate behaviour and completion of their work on a daily basis.

The goals of the LAC Program are to assist the child to develop improved coping behaviours, constructive social/interpersonal skills, self-confidence and appreciation of personal strengths and weaknesses, and academic competency
