Celebrating WSD Teachers Making a Difference in Physical and Health Education

Our Physical Education teachers are inspiring students and communities in extraordinary ways. This year, several were recognized at the recent Physical and Health Educators of Manitoba Awards for their dedication, leadership, and innovative teaching:

• Caelan Leslie Thompson, Wellington School  – Dr. Andy Anderson Young Professional Award
• Jessica Moustarzak, Elmwood High School  – Winnipeg Regional Award 
• Scott Smoke, École Stanley Knowles School – Middle Years Award
• Tanner Owens, Elmwood School – Health Education Award 
• Jonathan Fast, Tec Voc High School – Senior Years Award 

For these educators, the awards celebrate connection and impact. Caelan Thompson says this award reminds him that he is not alone and that the work he does “contributes to the broader field of physical education.” For Jessica Moustarzak, whose award recognizes leadership through events and community impact, it all comes back to the students as “their enthusiasm, leadership, and willingness to step up makes every event meaningful.” 

Scott Smoke, École Stanley Knowles School – Middle Years Award

The awards also serve as a motivation and inspiration “to keep growing and trying new ideas” says Scott Smoke, who is constantly finding ways to make learning meaningful and fun for students. Tanner Owens teaches Phys. Ed. to “support all individuals to live a healthy, safe and knowledgeable life.” He acknowledges the great physical education teachers he had from WSD that shaped him and his practice today. Winnipeg School Division congratulates all award recipients. Their creativity, dedication, and leadership provide meaningful learning experiences in physical activity and health education. Their work strengthens our school communities and empowers students to lead healthier lives.
