Learning Through Internship/Mentorship

May 4, 2026

All students have time built into their weekly timetable for Learning through Internship and/or Mentorship opportunities. Advisors support students to pursue opportunities as a full class, in small groups, or on an individual basis depending on the age and readiness of the students.

Internal Internships are highly supported mentorship opportunities occurring within the school and supported by school staff or community partners (such as Bear Clan).

Shadowing Internships are designed to be individual in nature and involve students learning about a specific role of their choice through an ongoing opportunity to shadow a person in that role.

External Internships involve students pursuing, securing, and engaging in a working/mentorship relationship with a community mentor across any sector that the student is interested in.

Internship Pathways have been developed for each strand of our Internship/Mentorship opportunities. This set of documents will guide students to make appropriate Internship / Mentorship decisions for themselves and will support advisors to build student capacity towards readiness for each opportunity.

All students have an Internship folder that includes Internship Pathway information for each strand (Internal, Shadowing, and External) as well as a booklet to use for reflections and feedback.

Grade 9 /10 have Wednesday afternoons set aside for Internship/Community-Based Learning, while grade 11/12 have a more flexible Wednesday schedule available for this purpose. Multigrade advisories may also choose to use either a full day or half day for their entire advisory depending on their individual advisory goals and plans.
