Youth Nuclear Peace Summit

February 8, 2021

Kelvin scholars took part in the Youth Nuclear Peace Summit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, October 8th - 11th.  Delegates from across Canada, as well as from the United States, Japan and Nepal learned from experts on topics ranging from nuclear disarmament to the remediation of nuclear waste.  Among many highlights:  meeting with Dene activist Ashton Janvier, from La Loche, Saskatchewan, who spoke about the impacts of uranium mining on his First Nations community.  Kelvin delegates Marit S., Pearson M., Emily G., Ana A. and Christian R. collaborated with some 70 other students in drafting five articles containing 30 separate calls to action, each of which were refined, revised and subjected to United Nations style voting.  The final product, the Youth Peace Nuclear Treaty, will be presented at the United Nations in New York in 2020, when the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons comes up for review.
