All Candidates Forum

February 8, 2021

Over 120 students of Canada et le monde contemporain, Canadian History and World Issue packed Kelvin's theatre recently to take part in an All Candidates Forum featuring all six of the candidates running for a seat in Manitoba's legislature this April 19th.

Representatives of the Communist Party of Canada, the Green Party of Manitoba, the Liberal Party of Manitoba,  the Manitoba Party, the New Democratic Party of Manitoba, and the Progressive Conservative Party all accepted Kelvin's invitation to take part in the forum.  Ably moderated in both official languages by students Avery S., Grace M. and Thomas W., the event began with statements from all six politicians outlining their reasons for seeking public office and featured questions from the students present, along with questions written by Kelvin scholars drawn from a bowl .

Several of the questions asked were concerned with environmental issues, from fracking to carbon tax, from environmental regulation to the state of Lake Winnipeg.  Candidates said they were impressed with the research that went into the questions and with the attention accorded to all of the proceedings.  Students canvassed afterwards said they were surprised at who made the best impressions on them, and many remarked that more time was needed for those in attendance to dig deeper into more issues.

Kelvin's Social Studies department regularly organizes Election Forums whenever we go to the polls at the muncipal, provincial and federal levels.  For more information contact rsokalski@wsd1.org or department head cyoung@wsd1.org
