Kelvin Reach for the Top - Provincial Champions!
February 8, 2021
Kelvin's Reach for the Top team has won the Provincial Championship for 2017-18. The Senior Team, made up of grade 11 and 12 students Paulina H., Peter B, Spencer K., Nicholas L, Samuel P and David H., will represent Kelvin at the National Finals, to be held in Toronto at the end of May. Reach for the Top is Canada's answer to general knowledge quiz competitions such as "Jeopardy" (hosted by a Canadian Reach alumnus, Alex Trebek) and involves dozens of high school teams across the country. Over 30 teams competed in Manitoba, and Kelvin matched wits with the top eight recently at the University of Winnipeg's new Urban Studies campus at Merchants' Corner, facing off against teams from Portage Collegiate, River East, Fort Richmond, Gray Academy and St. Paul's High School. Kelvin finished the round robin portion of the Provincial Finals undefeated and took on St. John's Ravenscourt in the championship match, emerging victorious by 110 points -- a smashing victory. This marks the 12th time in 25 years that Kelvin has qualified for the National Finals and is Kelvin's 4th provincial championship in the last 12 years. Kelvin Reach has a long history, beginning in the 1960's when the game was televised nationally on the CBC, and continuing to the present day; Kelvin fields two teams, with approximately 20 students practicing every school-day lunch hour in room 35. Special thanks go out to Winnipeg City Councillor Brian Mayes, who sponsored the Provincial Finals this year. Stay tuned for a Kelvin versus Politicos Clash of the Trivia Titans in May, as the team prepares to match wits with the best in the country by playing against local elected representatives!
