Sewing Students Give Back to the Community

Recently students in clothing class have been busy working on community projects. The Grade 11/12 students have made Alzheimer touch quilts for seniors in care homes. A touch quilt is assembled from 36 fabric squares of different colours and textures, with texture being the most key. It is believed that textures help trigger memories in Alzheimer and dementia patients and keeps their brains active. Faux fur is a favourite fabric as it is believed to remind them of pets they many have once owned.

Grade 10 students have sewn children's pajamas which they donated to a women's shelter. The students discovered that when a family arrives at the shelter they are often without basic necessities such as night clothes. The students have been able to apply their newly learned skills to help people in their community, young and old. Sewing is a lot of fun and it's gratifying when something you make can help others.
