Kelvin students cast ballots in the recent Municipal Elections, as part of a province-wide survey of the youth vote conducted on Civic Election Day.  In two of three categories, Kelvin students' choices lined up with those of their youth counterparts across Winnipeg and with eligible voters aged 18 and over, choosing incumbent Mayor Brian Bowman and incumbent City Councillor John Orlikow.  However, both students at Kelvin and across the City diverged from the views of a majority of older Winnipegers when it came to opening up Portage and Main to pedestrians, with a slim majority opting to remove the barriers to crossing Portage and main on foot, in contrast with the nearly two-thirds opposed to such a move in the official Civic Election count.  Kelvin was one of dozens of schools across Manitoba to take part in Student Vote/Vote étudiant 2018.  Over 7500 students cast their ballots in this exercise in democracy.  Kelvin students learned about the importance of this civic duty and were exposed to the platforms of the various candidates and groups involved in the Muncipal Elections.  In addition to the ballots cast on the day of the election, Kelvin students cast cans and boxes of non-perishable food items in bins marked with the names of the mayoral candidates and for both sides in the plebiscite question, with all proceeds going to Winnipeg Harvest; more than 30 pounds of food was donated to the charity.  Thanks go out to Mr. Walker who proposed the Cast-A-Can initiative, and to Jacqueline B. of  Hopeful Aware Students Taking Action (HASTA, Kelvin's human rights collective) for organizing these events.
