IIRC April Activities

On April 22nd, the indigenous issues student and teacher reading circles met to discuss David Robertson's novel "The Evolution of Alice". The book is a beautifully written and a haunting story about a young indigenous mother who experiences an incredible tragedy on the reserve. Mr Robertson, who graduated from Kelvin in 1995, spoke to the teachers and students about his work. His talk was incredibly insightful and gave all who read the book the opportunity to ask him questions about how he wrote and conceptualized the novel.

On the same day but after school, Mr. Sokalski, Mr. Young, Mrs. Decelles, and teacher candidate Mr. Durling took a group of students to Winnipeg's north end to visit the Ukrainian Labour Temple as well as to participate at "Meet Me at the Bell Tower". Our group was joined by MLAs Wab Kinew and Kevin Chief, as well as indigenous activist Lenard Monkman and the Bear Clan patrol.  It was the first time Kelvin students met at the bell tower and it was a great opportunity to have a public discussion about issues such as violence and poverty in our city. It was a great day for Kelvin students and teachers to consider and discuss a variety of indigenous and local issues.
