Kelvin students "pitch" ideas at Mayor's "State of the City" address
Eight Kelvin students took part in a day-long workshop at the Convention Centre during which they collaborated with youth and community mentors to discuss their big ideas to improve Winnipeg and propose their ideas to Mayor Brian Bowman. The event, sponsored by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, attracted approximately 70 civic-minded scholars, most of whom came on their day off from school to take part. Ideas ranged from implementing recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to increasing Environmental Sustainability through better Active Transportation and city-wide composting; from engaging at-risk youth to enhancing access to services for the disadvantaged. Students worked hard to achieve consensus, then took a break to attend Mayor Bowman's State of the City address. Bowman highlighted historic anniversaries -- 100 years since the Winnipeg General Strike and the building of the Aqueduct which, while bringing clean water to Winnipeg, displaced Shoal Lake 40 First Nation. (Chris Young: please edit 😊 : ) Grade 12 students who attended included Tian K., Emily G., Tiva K., Evan M., Gabriel M., Heather A., Cassidy K. and Tim O. Special thanks go out to Kelvin parent Ellen Kornelson of the WCC for facilitating Kelvin's participation in recent addresses by the Mayor the Premier of Manitoba over the past few years.
