December 6th Vigil

Kelvin students have organized and presented a Vigil in honour of the 14 Engineering Students killed at the École Polytechnique of the Université de Montréal since 1990 -- for the past 25 years. This year, the tradition continued, as Kelvin took part in the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The entire student body listened to a school-wide announcement during which the events of the Montreal Massacre were summarized, with the help of images and statistics highlighting the problem of violence targetting women. During the announcement, white ribbons symbolizing a pledge to help end the violence were distributed to over 1000 staff and students, made by 20 volunteers from Kelvin's Women's Issues group.
Close to 100 students and staff took part in a ceremony which included music, poetry, a candle-lighting as well as documentary speeches and interviews on issues surrounding Gender Equity, Education for Girls, and more. About 30 students stayed on to discuss these issues following the Vigil, guided by esteemed retired Kelvin Social Worker, Karen Dana. Students are invited to come to Kelvin's Women's Issues group that meets in room 37 on Wednesdays at noon hour.
