Currently, Kelvin has a Career Advisor on staff, who works in conjunction with the Guidance Department, to help students navigate today's career landscape to assist with pre and postsecondary planning.

Students can meet with the Career Advisor to discuss:

Winnipeg School Division is committed to inspiring students to achieve academic success, reach goals and enter the workforce. Preparing for the workforce is an important outcome and through WSD Career Education, students build their own pathway for success.

Through a variety of curriculum choices, programs and events, students explore possible future career pathways. Winnipeg School Division partners with organizations to provide youth with occupational experiences, tools, technology and skills they need to lead to meaningful careers.

During the high school learning experience, students are closer to transitioning to the workforce, post-secondary education and other training opportunities and as such students are provided with opportunities to explore and consider career options using multiple pathways for their future. There are many opportunities to make career development self-directed and personally meaningful during high school.

Kelvin High School’s Career Education Team can assist students with finding diverse opportunities to explore career pathways.

Career Education Credits

Credit for Employment (CFE) 

  • The CFE offers students the opportunity to earn up to 2 high school credits in an authentic paid work environment. These courses allow students to develop skills they need to enter the world of work and apply knowledge and skills they learned in the Career Development Life/Work courses.

Career Development Internship (CDI)

  • The CDI offers students the opportunity to participate in an unpaid internship placement in a career of their interest, all while earning up to 2 high school credits.

Internship credits allow students to apply career development theory, knowledge, skills for success, and attitudes to their real-world experiences.

High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP)

  • The High School Apprenticeship Program is offered in partnership with Apprenticeship MB to encourage students to learn about occupations in the trades through paid work. Students can get up to 8 credits and will have their work hours logged with Apprenticeship MB to help them in pursuing the trade after graduation.

Community Service Student-Initiated Project (CSSIP)

  • Students can contribute to their community by volunteering for worthwhile causes or organizations. The civic knowledge, skills, and attitudes obtained from such community service activities can increase a student’s self-esteem and maturity and provide more awareness of the needs of others in the community. Students can earn a half or full credit towards their senior high diploma.

Work Experience Placements

  • Work placement is a means of achieving teaching/learning goals, objectives, and/or outcomes within existing courses. Work placement is not a course, but rather attached to other credit courses. Any course is able to incorporate a work placement provided the teacher is connecting to curriculum.

Resources and Partnerships

  • myBlueprint is a Canadian made online Career Exploration Tool that is used in all Grade 7 to 12 schools. Students need their MET number to create their account, please speak with your Career Advisor for more information.
  • Safe Workers of Tomorrow (SWOT) teaches Grade 9 and 10 students about the rights of workers, how to spot a hazard and employment standards in Manitoba.
  • Youth Employment Services provides our students with a variety of workshops to help them get the skills they need to enter the workforce.
  • Apprenticeship Manitoba is the governing body for all apprentices in Manitoba and is working with schools to engage students in careers in the trades.
