Grade 4/5/6 - Ms. Lepla - Room 203

WELCOME  

I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year as we go through this learning journey together. My goal this year is to help create a learning environment for students to inquire and explore new things. Our classroom is a safe learning environment where we follow Pinkham School's C.A.R.E. principles.

Subject Areas

English Language Arts:

Students will take part in our Daily 5 routines of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Students will also be taking part in novel studies, writer's workshops and book reporting.

Math:

Students will be exploring several different topics in math this year. We will be using various methods throughout our learning, such as building thinking classrooms, using mental math strategies, problem solving, hands-on manipulation as well as group and independent learning investigations.

Social Studies:

Through inquiry and investigation, students will acquire a greater knowledge and understanding of Canadian history and geography. Students will also be able to understand how Canada's history helped to shape our lives as Canadian's in the present. 

Science & Health:                                                                                                                  

Students will be able to identify practical problems and determine various methods in order to solve them. They will also be able to inquire and research historical facts and contributions to the world of science. For Health, we will be exploring the Second Step Program and Family Life.

Assessment

The Elementary Assessment Program (EAP) will be taking place within the classroom during the next several weeks. These assessments help to evaluate each student's strengths and helps to determine the next steps of their learning.

Students will also be assessed through daily observation and discussion. The intent of each activity, as well as the criteria will be made clear to students to help ensure students are aware of what they need to do in order to be successful learners.

Classroom Expectations

It is expected that students will be respectful to classmates, staff and school property. If a student should behave disrespectfully, they will be given a warning. If the behaviour persists, consequences will follow in the form of the loss of classroom privileges. In the event that the behaviour continues parents will be notified by phone.  

Attendance is crucial in your child's success at school. Please ensure that your child comes to school each day, and on time. If your child cannot attend school for any reason or will be late, please notify the school as soon as possible.

Homework

All students are expected to participate in the Home Reading Program; which will commence in mid October. Students are encouraged to read for 15-20 minutes every night to help increase their reading stamina, fluency and comprehension.

It is my goal to give students enough time to finish work in class by incorporating finishing work time, when possible, for students who need it. At times, this may not be enough for some. Students who do not complete class work during the allotted times will need to take work home to finish and return it to school by the assigned date.
