I am very excited for this new school year and for our community of life-long learners! Below you will see our year-at-a glance and all the wonderful learning experiences our grade 7’s & 8's are planning to have!
English Language Arts:
For our Grade 7 ELA outcomes this year, we will be covering an array of topics and materials including;
- Persuasive Writing
- Fairy Tales
- Book Reports & Personal reviews
- Two Novel Studies
- News Article writing
We will be starting our focus on Canadian Geography, with a completion project using online research to present an assigned province or territory.
We will then move on to World Geography where students will learn about topography and mapping techniques. We will also focus on Quality of Life and Human Rights, both in Canada, and in other countries around the World.
We will complete the year learning about the continents of Asia, Africa and Australia.
English Language Arts:
For our Grade 8 ELA outcomes this year, we will be covering an array of topics and materials including;
- Persuasive Essay Writing
- Short Stories
- Arthurian Legends and Storytelling
- Informative Letter Writing
- Two novel studies
Students will be given time to independently read materials of their choosing and complete Reading Journals, daily. At the end of each novel, they are to complete a Reading Comprehension assignment of their choosing.
We have access to the school library once a cycle, where students are highly encouraged to choose high quality books, of their choice.
Students will be working on Math daily in Room 18 with Mr. Gillespie.
Students will be working on Science daily in Room 18 with Mr. Gillespie.
We will be starting our focus with learning how to understand our societies in the past and present. The Grade 8 curriculum begins with looking at the important role of History and Historians in our lives.
Then we will be learning about the way of life for Humans all the way from the Megalithic time period, through to ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and the Medieval Ages.
To end the year, we will look at the European Renaissance and the Industrial Era.
Students will be learning about Family Life this year. Focus will be on mental health, self-esteem and positive body image, personal safety, drug education and STI awareness.
Students go to Gym 3 times a cycle.
Integrated Fine Arts:
Students will spend one hour a cycle working with the Arts teacher this school year.
Students will have Shops at Niji Makawa School, on Day 3 in the afternoon. Students walk to and from the school, no matter the weather, so please ensure they are prepared.
