Student Diversity-Student Leadership Conference

February 4, 2021

Two Kelvin students, along with students from Maples Collegiate and St. Norbert Collegiate, were invited to participate in a panel at the Louis Riel School Division’s inaugural GSA conference entitled “Student Diversity/Student Leadership” on May 15. Bradley Christopher West (LGBT* Program Facilitator, SERC Brandon) was the Keynote Speaker. Break-out groups included presentations by the Rainbow Resource Centre (Bill 18), Teen Talk (mental health/stress/coping), Youth Educating Against Homophobia (YEAH), and the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, and Red River College (post-secondary support).
The culminating panel event allowed the nearly 200 students in grades 7 – 12 and their teachers to connect with schools in other divisions and question them about their successes, challenges, and strategies for starting and maintaining Gay-Straight Alliances in their schools. Our students did a great job in representing Kelvin with their contributions to the panel.
Kelvin’s GSA meets every Thursday at lunch in Room 47. Check out the GSA webpage, linked under Athletics & Extra-Curricular, on the Kelvin website.
