Historic Winnipeg Tour

February 8, 2021

Grade 11 Immersion française students completed a 8 kilometre tour of Historic Winnipeg in October, led by Monsieur Sokalski and Stagiaire/Teacher Candidate Daniel Bilodeau. The tour took students throught the Exchange District, Old Saint-Boniface, the Forks and ended on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature.

In addition to visiting the sites and scenes made (in)famous during the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, students took in the vast array of luxurious bank buildings and expandable warehouses that characterized the boom period Winnipeg experienced in the 1890s/early 1900s.
Students were invited to compare and contrast the two monumental statues of "the Father of Manitoba" Louis Riel; the controversial version by Marcien Lemay now removed to the Université de Saint-Boniface versus the statesmanlike version favoured by the Manitoba Métis Federation behind the Legislature.

This year's grade 11's broke all records for eco-friendly transportation, with over 30 students choosing to make the journey with their teachers on bicycle!
