Wellington School has been extremely fortunate to receive the Indigo Love of Reading Fund. Wellington School will receive $ 50,000 a year for the next three years. The funds are devoted to books and resources to help enhance literacy. The Indigo Love of Reading Fund has selected ten schools across Canada to support and Wellington School is one of the successful schools.

“We are making an investment in the future of our children,” said Heather Reisman, CEO of Indigo Books & Music Inc. “Early literacy is the basis of self-esteem and a clear indicator of future success. By providing schools with the resources they need we are opening a world of possibilities for our children. We are showing students that there are many opportunities out there and that they can be whatever they set their mind to.”

“We are thrilled by this news!” said Angeline Ramkissoon, Principal, Wellington School. “With the support of the Love of Reading Fund, we look forward to fostering a culture of literacy in our school by providing our students with the latest books and literacy materials to get them even more excited about reading and learning.”

A Literacy Team with representation from all grade levels will develop a plan to further our goals in building a Literacy Rich Community.

On April 25, 2007 staff from the Chapters Polo Park store - Jodi Bodnaryk the General Manager,
Jamie Vermette – School Sales and Darren Dupras – Customer Experience Manager joined students and staff in opening the first arrival of books provided by Indigo.

Thank you Indigo for the gift of literacy!

Indigo Love Of Reading Literacy Launch Friday November 16, 2007

The week leading up to our Literacy kick-off was an exciting week indeed. One could sense the excitement building as students applied their last touches to the posters being prepared for the walls of the gym. These posters gave expression to students’ favourite books/authors in the Nursery classes all the way up to Grade 6.

The posters were exquisitely detailed using paint, felt markers, chalk pastels, and crayons. As we approached the end of the week the helium balloons boasting “Wellington Reads” were carefully inflated (one for every student), snacks prepared (chocolate milk, popcorn and a mandarin orange) and posters hung in the gym and surrounding hallways. Early Friday afternoon our guests began to arrive.

The guests were awed by the hundreds of posters created by our students lining the wall of the gymnasium. Our guests included our parents, our MLA Andrew Swan, our city councillor Harvey Smith, our district superintendent Ms. Pauline Clarke, our special helpers at Chapters/Indigo, Darren and Joanne, and many others.

We invited Mr. Al Simmons to put on a special musical/comedy performance for our students. Al Simmons was a huge success with our students and also treated the adults to plenty of chuckles.

Al Simmons reminded us of the importance of reading books at our own reading/interest level and the presence of libraries in our schools and communities.

The gym was decorated with the carefully and artistically crafted posters depicting many of our favourite books. After the Kick-off parents, guests and staff were invited to join us for refreshments.

It was a splendid afternoon. We want to extend an immense thank-you to Chapters/Indigo for your generous contribution of $150,000 over the next three years. Your contribution is making it possible to continue to extend literacy into our students’ homes, our classroom libraries and the school library.

We also with to thank our Parent volunteers and staff for the many hours of hard work in making this event a very successful Wellington Event!

Thank-you!

Wellington School Students visit Chapters Book Store

As a part of the Indigo Love of Reading Program Wellington School will be taking our classrooms to visit the Chapters Book Store Polo Park on Empress Avenue.

While there students will be able to select one book to add to their home reading library.

Wellington School strives to promote and develop literacy and we are happy to be able to offer this program to our students.

Between November 2007 and May 2008 all of the 450 students at Wellington School  will have the opportunity to visit Chapters Book Store and select books to add to their own home library.

For some of our students it was their first visit to such a large book store.

A fabulous opportunity and a great gift of literacy for each of our students!
