Where history meets the future! Since the first cornerstone was laid in 1915, École George V School has been a cornerstone of the Elmwood community. From our royal beginnings to our vibrant, bilingual present, our halls have told a story of growth, community spirit, and academic excellence for over a century. Whether in English or French Immersion, our students are part of a proud legacy that continues to shine today.

Our Historic Roots

The story of École George V School began in 1915 to meet the needs of a rapidly growing neighbourhood. After careful planning by the school board, a beautiful seven-classroom building was designed to serve the families of northeast Elmwood.

Named in honour of King George V, the school held its official opening ceremony igeorgevschool2.070a0136346.jpgn February 1916. The event was a community milestone, attended by local leaders and the very first lady elected to the Winnipeg Public School Board, Mrs. J.K. Brown.

A Growing Campus

As Elmwood flourished, the school evolved to ensure every student had a place to learn and thrive. Over the decades, the campus underwent several exciting transformations:

  • Expanding the Vision: A major addition in 1948 added seven more classrooms and a large auditorium for school gatherings and performances.
  • Building for the Future: In 1951, a second building was constructed to accommodate a booming population of over 700 students.
  • A Unified School: While the buildings stood side-by-side for many years, a "link way" was completed in 1991, finally joining the structures into the unified, accessible campus we enjoy today.
  • Community Spirit: Our school has always been backed by an incredible community. In the late 1970s, it was the passion and advocacy of local families that ensured our historic original building was preserved and updated for future generations.
