French Immersion Program

About our Program
Our French Immersion Program is designed for children whose first language is not French. It provides instruction in the same Manitoba curriculum areas as the English Program, with the addition of French Language Arts. Instruction is done in French except for PhysEd and English Language Arts, which is taught 1 hour a day beginning in Grade 1.
Our French Immersion Program starts in Kindergarten or Grade 1. While sensitive to the new learning experience, the half-day kindergarten classes are conducted as completely as possible in French. The Kindergarten to Grade 12 French Immersion Program offers students a chance to become competent in both French and English. Students graduating from a French Immersion program will have employment opportunities in either English or French or may pursue post-secondary education in either language.
Expectations of the Program
Building strong language skills in your child’s first language at home is important for learning other languages and we encourage you to do this through conversations, board games and math games. Some parents worry that their children will be behind in English but most French Immersion students will catch up to their English peers in reading and writing at their pace, usually by the end of Grade 3 or 4.
Attendance
Regular attendance at school is important no matter what program your child is in. It will be important that your child attend school daily and on time in order to learn and expand their oral skills, vocabulary, reading and writing in all subject areas. Poor attendance impacts a child’s progress and growth academically.
