In a show of support for all those affected by this conflict, the Sisler Social Justice and Chess Clubs are collaborating with the Manitoba Chess Association to organize First Ever Chess Tournament for any student in Manitoba from grades 7 to 12 students who wishes to participate.

There is no entry fee although students and their parents/guardians will be welcome to make a contribution to Canadian Red Cross at https://www.redcross.ca/donate/appeal/donate-to-the-ukraine-humanitarian-crisis-appeal#9cfdcd2b-85a7-4899-ada2-f8bdae8d0939 and Canada-Ukraine Foundations https://www.cufoundation.ca/ if you wish.

The Peace in Ukraine Chess Tournament will be held during the Spring Break from 9:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 in the Senior Gymnasium at Sisler. The tournament will consist of six rounds of play, with each player having 12 minutes (plus a 3 second increment per move) to play each game. All players will play the full six rounds with a one hour break for lunch.

Non-cash prizes will be awarded to the winner(s) of the event as well as the school team with the best performance in the tournament. Students (and any parent/guardian or teacher who wishes to be a spectator) will be responsible for their own transportation to/from the event. Our lunchroom will be made available for those who wish to bring their own lunch.

If you have students who would like to participate, we ask them to register in advance by sending an email to me at opetryshyn@wsd1.org    Please ask your students to arrive at Sisler between 9:30 and 9:45 on the day of the event so everyone is paired and ready to play by 10:00.

According to the United Nations "Chess is a global game, which promotes fairness, inclusion and mutual respect in this regard that it can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations" https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-chess-day   Our goal with the Peace in Ukraine Chess Tournament is to further these objectives and demonstrate our support for children and students who are affected by this terrible war.
