Students at École Secondaire Sisler High School participated in the Rotary Club of Manitoba’s Virtual Model United Nations on April 28th and 29th. The theme of the conference this year was “Resilience, Preservation, and Deliberation”. The Model United Nations helps students increase their awareness of global issues like the dangers fake media bring to democracy and climate change.
The students spent time preparing to discuss and debate the resolutions of this year’s conference by taking on the role of UN ambassadors from an assigned country. They needed to research their country and find what its position was on global issues. They then needed to write up that position into a resolution which they would defend at the conference. The theme of this year’s event was “Resilience, Preservation and Deliberation.”
Our team consisted of 8 grade 9 students and two grade 11 students, who will form the core for our future Model UN teams. As students gain more experience with the conference, they will take on additional leadership roles.
The team this year consisted of Nic Dalope and James Harapiak representing Paraguay, Aldrin Boquerin and Kira Mitchell representing The Solomon Islands, Nate Short and Michael Visnyak representing South Africa, Rovick Rivera and Reese Cunningham representing Sudan, Aly Hannesson and Riya Gandhi representing the United States. In addition, Aly, Kira and Aldrin all were assigned to be facilitators for their groups, which is an important leadership role. Mr. Bilewitch and Ms. Petryshyn were the teacher councilors for the students, who helped them prepare for the conference, and coached them while the conference was occurring.
