Jump for health
March 18, 2024 News Story
During the month of February students at Sister MacNamara jumped their way to a deeper understanding of the importance of cardiovascular health.
In physical education students focused on heart health and the locomotor skill of jumping by practicing jump rope every class and exploring other jumping activities. Students learned about the location, size, and function of the heart, the benefits of cardiovascular activities, and what effects physical inactivity can have on the human body.
Along with jumping rope students also experienced jumping focused cultural activities including Inuit and Dene games, as well as tinikling (a Filipino folk dance).
Students deepened their understanding of meaning, skills, and reasoning that surrounded these activities.
At the end of the month, we had a jump challenge in every class to find out who could complete the most skips in one minute; that student became the jump champion for their classroom.
All of this learning accumulated to an exciting event on February 29 were we celebrated our learning with a full day of jumping stations and a whole school assembly in the gym; where the jump champion from each class competed against other classroom champions in their grade to find out who was the ultimate jump champion.
Several students demonstrated the traditional Inuit jumping games and performed a tinikling routine during the assembly.
We all had so much fun cheering on the jumpers, and we ended the assembly with a staff jump off!
