A group of Grant Park High School students will represent Winnipeg School Division in the upcoming Canada-Wide Science Fair after advancing from a virtual version of WSD’s long-running science fair.

The 52nd annual Winnipeg Schools’ Science Fair was held virtually on April 6 and 7, with seven schools and over 60 Grades 7-12 students participating.

Students created projects, in both French and English, using an online platform called ProjectBoard hosted by Youth Science Canada. This innovative approach allowed students to present their projects virtually using a variety of media, such as photos and videos. Judging was completed virtually using Google Meet to provide the students with an opportunity to present their projects and answer questions related to their research.

Judges selected four projects to present their science projects in a virtual edition of the Canada-Wide Science Fair on May 16-20:

An additional Grade 8 student, Nathaniel Martin, will also compete at nationals after advancing from the recent Manitoba Schools’ Science Symposium with his project To Mask or not to Mask? Why is that Even a Question?

WSD Program Lead Kristin Melnyk said judges were impressed by the calibre of work presented by students at this year’s WSSF.

“We would like to congratulate all our amazing students, staff and sponsors that helped to create such a successful Science Fair. Our students should be celebrated for their continued growth in creating such innovative scientific research!”

Winnipeg Schools' Science Fair provides students with opportunities to explore a topic of personal interest and make meaningful connections to the curriculum while engaged in authentic scientific processes/thinking. These opportunities continue to build positive attitudes towards science and prepare students for futures in STEM.
