Grade 9 English:
This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course.
Grade 10 English:
This course has a strong emphasis on human rights and is focused on Canada’s Aboriginal people. Through the study of film, poetry, memoir, fiction and non-fiction writing students explore the themes of identity, culture, reconciliation and reclamation. Students will write journals, scrapbooks, poetry, essays and film reviews to explore the themes in this course.
Grade 11 (Literary focus):
Grade 11 English is designed to give students exposure to a variety of genres and writing tasks. Family and self are the themes that guide this level’s English experience. Assignments include personal writing exercises, novel responses, inquiry projects, presentations and research essays. Students are exposed to scholarly, peer-reviewed journals, short stories and poems as well as novels. There is more focus on literary forms but some emphasis is placed on transactional writing.
Grade 12 (Transactional focus)
Career exploration, goal setting and planning for the future are the foci for Grade 12 transactional English. Students do career research, resume and portfolio preparation, inquiry research and through the study of film and novels, think about and create their personal “bucket list”. They read and explore scholarly research, poetry, novels, film and career web sites, as well as conduct interviews and explore and utilize the concepts of design. Writing for this course includes a career portfolio, research essays, novel response and film review as well as creative interpretation of metaphor. Students in this course are also given guidance in the preparation for the English Standards Exam in June.
