Eco Club

January 5, 2023

The Principal Sparling Enviro Club consists of over 30 students ranging from grades 3-6.  The students worked on various projects last year. They made three vermi-compost bins for the purpose of recycling compostable food waste in the school.  Students fed the worms in the bins weekly and collected the worm castings in the spring to use as natural fertilizer.  Students also prepared the soil in two garden beds that were constructed after receiving grant monies from MB Hydro and Nutrients For Life.  Students incorporated the fertilizer into the soil and then planted a variety of vegetables including: tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, beets, radishes, lettuce, corn, peas and beans.  They worked to water the gardens on a daily schedule.  This year, we have increased the number of vermi-compost bins to five to accommodate more waste.  Enviro Club students will continue to feed and maintain the bins throughout the year.  The garden project is expected to expand soon and produce more vegetables for harvest.
