FRANÇAIS

Français 10F - FILF 1F

The objective is to solidify the four language competencies. Though an emphasis will continue to be the further development of spontaneous communication skills, added importance will now be placed on strengthening the structural aspects of the language. Students will work through a variety of media: texts, novels, film, radio, journals, magazines, class discussions and library research.

Evaluation: Written Comprehension (short story, novel study, comprehension and analytical texts), Oral Comprehension (film study), Written Production (journal entries), Oral Production (debates, Concours d’art oratoire, PowerPoint presentations) and a Final exam.

Français 20F - FRAF 2F

This course emphasizes the development of oral and writing skills of the French language through the study of literary and non-literary works. Study of grammar, verbs and vocabulary is emphasized.

The methodology used is the communicative approach where authentic documents are used in an authentic setting. Students further their knowledge of written and oral skills through various media such as newspaper articles, posters, songs, films, interviews, short stories, Concours d’art oratoire and radio shows.

Evaluation: Written Comprehension (short story, novel study, comprehension and analytical texts), Oral Comprehension (film study), Written Production (journal entries), Oral Production (debates, oral presentations, PowerPoint presentation) and a Final exam.

Français 30S - FRAF 3S

This course continues to develop skills acquired in previous years. Literary and non-literary works are studied. Debates, radio shows, volunteer hours at Le Festival du Voyageur and more are used to strengthen oral skills. Grammar skills are strongly enforced.

Evaluation: Tests/quizzes, Major Written Assignments, Major Oral Assignments and a Final exam.

Français 40S - FRAF 4S

This course consists of the study of literary and non-literary works as well as a review of grammar skills. The objectives are as follows: becoming more familiar with French literature, appreciating the Francophone culture and civilization, continuing to develop oral and written comprehension, and perfecting written and oral skills in view of the Provincial Exam. To achieve these goals, the course is divided into: literature, argumentative texts, grammar, composition, debates and film critiques.

Evaluation: Tests/quizzes, Major Written and Oral Assignments, Ongoing Assessment Activities (in-class discussion, skits, etc.) and a Provincial exam.


ANGLAIS

English Language Arts - ENGF 1F, ENGF 2F, ENLF 3S, ENCF 4S, ENTF 4S

Core courses provide learners with access to a core curriculum with goals and objectives related to reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing using a wide variety of literary and transactional materials.

Literary materials include poetic and dramatic texts/media and novels. Transactional materials include the widest range of transactional text and other media including journalistic and technical materials.

Each of these categories of materials should receive equal attention in core courses in order to best prepare learners of the future.

Evaluation: Students will become increasingly involved in their assessment throughout grades 9 - 12. They will develop rubrics and assess their peers and themselves with the goals of an increased understanding and mastery of language.

English Language Arts 10F - ENGF 1F

The focus in the grade 9 program is the exploration of language. Students are encouraged to consolidate their knowledge from previous years of language arts and begin to make critical and analytical responses. The course includes short stories, novels, plays and poetry; and has been broadened to include film, radio and newspapers.

Writing will include: creative writing, responses to personal reading, summarizing and note taking strategies and the importance of organization and presentation (portfolio and notebooks). Skill development includes spelling and vocabulary building, language and reading skills, proofreading and editing. A human rights unit will focus on the Holocaust.

The overall emphasis is on content and vehicle. Students will gain an awareness of how a particular vehicle (novel, play, film) is related to the content being communicated.


English Language Arts Core 20F - ENGF2F

The language arts program follows the Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes: emphasizing skill development through the integration of the six language arts: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing.

Content material may include: literary journals, group work, drama, interviews, debates, creative writing, essay writing, poetry, short story and novel study, newspaper and magazine articles. A human rights unit will focus on Aboriginal Perspectives.

English Language Arts 30S Literary - ENLF 3S

This course follows the curriculum framework of outcomes continuing to develop students’ communication skills through the integration of the six language arts: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing with an emphasis on STYLE.

Course material exposes students to a variety of literary and transactional texts including journalistic and technical materials.

English Language Arts 40S

The grade 12 English Program is worth TWO credits. Students must complete the compulsory credit before proceeding to the elective credit.

Core Credit - ENCF 4S

The 4S program maintains an integrated approach to the six language arts of: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing while focusing students’ attention on FORM: the pattern or structure of content material.

This course uses a variety of language forms for study:

  • Literary: Novels, short stories, poetry
  • Drama: Shakespeare, readers’ theatre
  • Media: Documentary, newscast, animation
  • Interactive: Interview, group collaboration
  • Facilitative: Outlines, notes, directions, memos

The Provincial Exam will be worth 30% of the course.

Transactional Focus (Elective) - ENTF 4S

Transactional Focus includes an emphasis on communication in the business world, journalism, public relations, advertising and the media.

Students learn a range of knowledge, skills and strategies and attitudes that help them function more effectively in various communities from the classroom to the global community. The Transactional Focus emphasizes the pragmatic use of language: language that informs, directs, persuades, plans, analyzes, argues and explains. Many guests are invited to the course to help deliver information.

Examples: Youth Employment Services, Apprenticeship Training, Workers of Tomorrow, Canadian Bankers Association, the Winnipeg Police Service, etc.

Forms for study include: reports, articles, documentaries, oral discussions and the media. Each student will create a Career Portfolio. The course includes Business Communication Skills with an emphasis on resumes and interview techniques.


ESPAGÑOL

Spanish 10G - SPAR 1G

This course provides learning opportunities in the basic Spanish language arts: reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening. It aims to assist students in developing basic oral and written communication skills. Students will have the opportunity to cook Spanish food, and visit Spanish restaurants and places. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to speak, comprehend, read and write Spanish at a basic level of proficiency. This course also introduces students to the history, geography and diversity of Hispanic culture.

Spanish 20G - SPAR 2G

Students will use Spanish in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes such as: express emotions and personal perspectives, impart and receive information, maintain interpersonal relationships, use the language for imaginative purposes and personal enjoyment, extend their knowledge of the work and to use it in a real life situation.  Students will make piñatas and other crafts and will practise the language with the community by visiting Spanish restaurants and markets.

Spanish 30S - SPAR 3S

The purpose of this course is to assist the student in the further development of the receptive and expressive language skills in Spanish. Students are provided with opportunities to continue learning about the richness of Hispanic culture. By the end of this course the student should be able to listen, read, write and speak at an intermediate level of proficiency. Students will connect with the Spanish community by visiting Spanish places in Winnipeg.

Spanish 40S - SPAR 4S

Students will be able to share information, thoughts, opinions, preferences and emotions and feelings. They will be able to guide the actions of others, state personal actions and manage group actions. They will be able to extend their knowledge of the world by gathering and organizing information by using their problem-solving skills and by exploring opinions and values. They will also be able to use the language for personal enjoyment, and to manage personal relationships. Spanish Day is promoted every year with the help and coordination of our students.
