Welding is an employable skill for many Canadians where they measure, cut and fuse metal pieces to fabricate equipment and parts used in machines, cars, construction and a range of industries.

At R. B. Russell Vocational High School, students learn welding for their future skilled careers and to express themselves as a form of art. Besides building high utility products like fire-pits and pizza ovens, students create structures and memorials that profoundly impact and connect with our daily lives.

In 2018, two students spent 300 hours welding 'The Red Dress' to increase awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), and in 2017 they fabricated 'The Rose' in honour of Tina Fontaine.

Continuing the impressive work this year, the students and their teacher have worked on unique, custom-made and thought-provoking projects. In this video, welding teacher Mike Johnston explains his Top 5 favourite student welding projects from this school year.
