Grade 4-6 Musical 'Newsies'

Funding for this project supports all students in Grades 4 – 6 who will be cast in and rehearse for the musical from February through May. The roles are double cast to ensure all the students have an opportunity to perform. Students will develop confidence in performance and appreciation of the Arts and develop global competencies in communication, collaboration, critical thinking/problem- solving, creativity/innovation, and self- directed learning. Funding supports fees for services, supplies not available in school, film and development, equipment rental/instruction, and costumes.

Empowering Young Parents

Funding for this project supports all students in Grades 9 – 12 by empowering the young parents program. The opportunity to work with an Indigenous Grandmother and multiple sessions will allow students to receive teachings and learn how they can bring Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being into all aspects of their lives. Their work will culminate in a field trip to the Grey Buffalo Grandfather Healing Lodge near Hillside, Manitoba. Funding supports fees for services, supplies not available in school, and camp.

Indigenous Drum Making Workshop

Funding for this project supports the school and students in starting an Indigenous Drum-Making Workshop. The drum-making workshop will serve as a platform for cultural education, promoting an understanding of Indigenous storytelling through song and Indigenous practices, and spirituality through the Leadership and Programming provided by the grandmother. Communicating with Refugees and Indigenous People

Funding for this project supports the school-wide initiative to encourage and enhance responsible and empathetic attitudes to understanding Indigenous people and Refugees’ experiences through the creation of the Communication Club. The Communication Club will learn from the experiences of people who have experienced trauma and have used communication skills as a source of empowerment and recovery. Students are introduced to various communication strategies through collaboration with Red River Collegiate Polytech Professors and Students. Funding supports artist’s fees/guest speakers, supplies not available in school, film and development, and home reading/book lending.

William Whyte Community School
Indigenous Book Expansion

Funding for this project will provide William Whyte School the opportunity to start their home reading program in the early years. To foster a love of reading, children need to see themselves represented. The goal is to purchase books by Indigenous authors that feature Indigenous characters and Indigenous Ways of Knowing. As oral storytelling is integral to Indigenous culture, William Whyte School will purchase wordless books to honour this tradition. This will encourage families to tell stories in their own words and language, helping to reclaim their culture in the spirit of reconciliation. Funding supports home reading/book lending.

Funding for this program will further promote Argyle Alternative High School’s Big Picture Learning through interest where students’ voices and choices are central by guiding them to be leaders and fostering opportunities to learn beyond school walls. CCHS Land-Based Learning and Canoe Trip Program

Funding for this program will assist Collège Churchill High School students in establishing and building meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non- Indigenous students and community members whilst developing a significant connection to the natural world. Students will travel to Shoal Lake 40 First Nation to learn about the history of relations between Winnipeg and Indigenous peoples to create a reciprocal relationship by participating in a community service project. Funding supports fees for artist’s fees/guest speakers, and fees for services/performances.

The camp is also a farewell to most student in grade 9 who have been enrolled at Keewatin Prairie Community School for the past 11 years. (N-Grade 9). In addition to learning activities and developing skills related to activities, students will be exposed to activities that promote living an active life style, promote mental heath and wellbeing, developing and using social skills. Voyageur Days at Oak Hammock Marsh

Funding for this program will provide Grades 3-4 students with the opportunity to explore the life of the voyageurs and Metis in an outdoor, place-based setting with hands-on activities. Through some games and friendly competition, students will replicate the daily activities of the voyageurs and learn about the fur trade. Students will also make Bannock around a fire and celebrate the voyageur's life. Funding supports fees for student admissions/registrations.
