Nursery & Kindergarden

February 4, 2021

Isaac Brock School offers half day Nursery and Kindergarten classes. The morning class is from 9:00-11:30 am and the afternoon class is from 1:00-3:30 pm. Many of our children go next door to the daycare that runs out of Valour Community center for the other half of the day. You can phone the Valour Community center at 204-775-3869 for more information.

Both the morning and the afternoon classes are a combined Nursery and Kindergarten group. The students participate in Music, Gym, Computer, Library and Book Buddies.

We are fortunate to be in the Winnipeg School Division, as the Nursery school program is free of charge for those who live in the division. The school division set up its own Nursery curriculum. Nursery children learn through play. There is a focus on developing rich language, learning new vocabulary, and developing social skills. The students have specific learning outcomes for Language Arts and Math and they receive a report card to let caregivers know what they are working on.

The Kindergarten students follow the curriculum provided by the Manitoba government. In Language Arts students learn many things, including recognizing and writing upper and lower case letters, recognizing and producing rhymes, and learning to appreciate books. A special part of the year is when our speech and language pathologist comes to help us in our Phonemic Awareness groups. Puppets come to introduce new letter sounds and then we break up into smaller groups to practise using what we have learned in various activities. There is then a snack that correlates with the new letter sound that was learned. For example on “Ss Day”, Sid Snake taught students the ‘Ss’ sound and then made submarine sandwiches. Towards the end of the year, the students are placed in writing and reading groups and are taught the beginning stages of reading and writing to prepare them for grade one.

For Math the students are also divided into small groups to work on the four main curriculum areas: Patterns and Relationships, Statistics and Probability, Shape and Space, and Number. There is a focus on understanding how numbers and patterns work and using mathematical language.

The teachers teach Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music and Art using various themes that change monthly. There are special days to celebrate what was learned such as The Teddy Bear Picnic, Grandparent’s Day, Beach Party Day … The classes go on an all day fieldtrip to the farm towards the end of the year.
