Winnipeg School Division is committed to safe, respectful, and focused classrooms. Smartphones and other mobile devices—like tablets, smart watches and smart glasses—can support learning, but only when used responsibly.

Our guidelines follow the direction of Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning.

Early and Middle Years (Nursery to Grade 8)

  • Students are not allowed to use mobile devices during the school day.
  • Devices must be left at home, in backpacks, or stored in lockers.

Senior Years (Grades 9 to 12)

  • Students are not allowed to use mobile devices in class.
  • Devices must be kept in backpacks, lockers, or designated areas (such as phone hotels).
  • Students may use devices during lunch or class breaks.

Adults and Staff

Adults are expected to model responsible use. Personal mobile devices should not be used in classrooms when children are present.

What about classroom projects that use tablets?

Some programs require tablets for learning. In these cases, schools will decide when and how devices are used.

What if my child needs access to their smartphone for medical reasons?

If your child needs access to a phone for medical reasons, please contact your school principal to discuss accommodation.
