On Wednesday, November 29, students from across Winnipeg School Division were picked up from their schools by Winnipeg police officers for the annual Shopping With Cops event at St. Vital Centre.

Shopping With Cops provides each student with a $200 gift card, donated by the mall, to be spent while accompanied by a police officer who volunteers their time for this special event. Students can choose to buy anything they wish, such as winter clothes, toys and holiday gifts for their loved ones.

For one student, they were on a mission to check off all the people on their shopping list including their Mom, Grandmother and a couple things for himself.

“Today was actually really fun, it made my day! My favourite part was going into Game Stop and buying all these gifts,” shared WSD student Donte.

After the students were finished shopping, everyone gathered in the food court for a pizza party lunch.

“Shopping With Cops is a fantastic event in partnership with St. Vital that provides us a unique opportunity to meet some wonderful young people and take them shopping for the holiday season,” said Constable Dirk Creighton. “These kids are amazing, it’s so nice to be here with them, build connections and let them know that we’re with them through their journey.”

The students are selected to participate in Shopping With Cops based on their academic and sports achievements, positive influence on peers and volunteer efforts that help to make a difference in the community. More than 60 students and officers participate in the event annually.

Thank you to St. Vital Centre and to the Winnipeg Police Service for making this year's Shopping With Cops event one to remember.1P5A1186-1.JPG
