River Heights: Live in the Round!

École River Heights School students, staff and families recently enjoyed an evening of perfect weather and great music.

The school held an evening band concert on June 7, in one of the outdoor hockey rinks at the neighbouring Corydon Community Centre.

Teacher Sarah Brolley guided students through their first live band concert since January 2020.

All of the students were first-year players, as the band program was not offered last year due to Covid. Despite some further Covid-related challenges this school year, River Heights was able to offer a band program—and students were eager to show off their skills to families and friends.

The Grade 7 concert band performed “Dojo” by Darrington White, “Gizmo” by Ralph Ford and John William’s “Theme to Star Wars” as arranged by Carl Strommen.

The Grade 8 concert band performed “Frenzy” by David Shaffer, “Midnight Sky” by Brian Balmages, “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt (arr. by Michael Sweeney) and “Happy Birthday” for one of the students performing in the concert.

The River Heights Jazz Band played “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones (arr. by the Jazz Band) and “Louie Louie” by Ellington, Mercer and Strayhorn (arr. by the Jazz Band).

Also on the bill was the Grade 7 rock duo of Ethan and Sully, who performed The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” The duo had been preparing the song for a music competition through Long & McQuade.
