Basketball is Medicine – RB Russell Court Reopening
September 16, 2025
Winnipeg School Division joined students, families, and community partners in celebrating the official opening of a newly designed outdoor basketball court at RB Russell Vocational High School.
But this vibrant space is more than just a sports venue. It is a place for connection, growth, and belonging. Through a collaboration with Buckets & Borders, the Winnipeg Sea Bears, and WarriorZ Basketball, the new court gifts physical activity and mental well-being while fostering a sense of community pride in the North End.
The court’s painted mural features artwork by Anishinaabe woodlands artist Blake Angeconeb titled “Basketball is Medicine.” The design includes an eagle and guardian thunderbirds, which symbolizes strength and protection, to honour the strong Indigenous culture in the community. The artwork demonstrates the belief that basketball can bring healing, hope, and unity to those who use the court.
The grand opening event featured speeches, live performances, a three-point shooting competition, games, and giveaways, creating a day of fun and celebration for all ages.
This court will be a valuable addition to the North End, providing a high quality, vibrant space that encourages physical activity and supports social connections. It is designed to serve the entire community, giving youth and residents a place to come together and strengthen their bonds.
