Ojibwe and Cree Bilingual Program

November 15, 2023

Have you considered enrolling your child in a Cree (nênowêwin) or Ojibwe (anishinaabemowin) Bilingual Program?

The Winnipeg School Division is proud to offer bilingual Cree language or Ojibwe language programs exclusively at Isaac Brock School.  The past few years have seen a significant increase in enrollment.  Entry level is Kindergarten or Grade One and space is limited so register early!

The Kindergarten to Grade 7 Cree and Ojibwe programs centre around ancestral teachings found within the medicine wheel.   The programs have a land-based component as this in an important part of language learning.  Culturally, there is a strong connection to the land and all the life it encompasses.

Instruction is bilingual with 50% of the instruction in Cree or Ojibwe and 50% in English.  Program experiences include opportunities to receive traditional teachings (medicines, drums, gift-giving, ribbon shirt & skirt, sweat lodge, etc.) and participate in ceremony (smudge, feast, pipe, sharing circle, powwow, Tipi teachings, Elders, drumming);

  • Transportation is provided for all students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 who reside within the Winnipeg School Division and live more than 1.6 kilometers from Isaac Brock School.
  • Weekly nutrition/snack provided.
  • Lunch supervision is also provided at no cost but students need to bring their own lunch and snacks.

Registration begins in February of each year.  Applications are available online and at the school.   When you apply, we will need a copy of your child(ren)’s birth certificate (or treaty card), health card and proof of residency (rental agreement on property tax bill).

Tours can be arranged to see the school and meet staff.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school or email isaacbrock@wsd1.org.
