On May 27th, Holly Cumming, a recently retired WSD Reading Recovery Teacher Leader was recognized by the International Literacy Association with the prestigious 2020 Celebrate Literacy Award.

The annual award recognizes educators across North America who have made significant literacy contributions at the local, state or provincial level. Holly’s 40-plus years of teaching experience have clearly distinguished her to be worthy of this notable distinction.

Throughout her career, Holly made Reading Recovery her passion, teaching students and advising teachers across the division and province. She has facilitated, coordinated and presented at numerous conferences locally, nationally and even internationally in Sydney, Australia.

Holly has also facilitated the implementation of several literacy initiatives, including the Literacy Lessons intervention project at Lord Roberts and Robertson schools. She has been co-director of the Manitoba Early Literacy Intervention Teachers SAGE group and is published in professional journals.

Winnipeg School Division was truly fortunate to benefit from such a dedicated teacher, leader, and scholar.

Holly received her Celebrate Literacy Award during the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg’s annual virtual award’s evening, during which several other classroom teachers and teacher candidates were recognized with awards and scholarships. Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg has been promoting literacy and the work of teachers and scholars since 1956.
