When can I apply for a School of Choice for my child?
All students must register with their catchment schools BEFORE applying for a School of Choice. Applications for a School of Choice are accepted for the next school year between March 1 and May 15 of each year. WSD informs families of application results by the last week of June, at the latest.
How can I apply for a School of Choice for my child?
School of Choice applications differ, depending on whether the student lives in Winnipeg School Division or not. Students residing within the division must fill out the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning Within-Division application form. Students living outside the division must fill out the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning Outside-Division application form.
Forms can only be emailed to Winnipeg School Division at schoolsofchoice@wsd1.org between March 1 and May 15. Any applications submitted outside of the March 1 to May 15 timeframe will not be reviewed or accepted. All School of Choice applications are time-stamped and processed following provincial guidelines.
If needed, printed copies can be dropped off in person at Winnipeg School Division, 1577 Wall Street East, during regular business hours between March 1 and May 15.
Can my child visit a school information session outside our catchment area?
Visiting schools outside your catchment area is not encouraged to ensure proper alignment with the divisional enrolment policy. Schools hosting information sessions should focus on hosting students from their designated feeder schools within the same catchment area, or students interested in attending for specialty programming.
Can my child take the school bus?
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6, who attend their catchment school and live over 1.6 km away, are eligible for WSD transportation. Nursery students who attend a French Milieu school, Niji Mahkwa, and Isaac Brock (for the Indigenous language program only), and live over 1.6 km away, are eligible for WSD transportation. Requests for transportation must be made at the school where the child is registered. Students must be registered first before requesting transportation. Transportation is not provided for students in Grade 7 or higher.
What vocational schools are available in Winnipeg School Division?
The division has two vocational senior years schools:
- Tec Voc: For Grades 9 to 12
- R.B. Russell: For Grades 9 to 12
What are the options for alternative senior years programs in Winnipeg School Division?The division has two alternative learning senior years schools:
- Argyle Alternative School: For Grades 10 to 12 with a personalized, project-based approach, supported by Big Picture Learning principles.
- Children of the Earth: For Grades 9 to 12 school focused on Indigenous ways of being, supported by Big Picture Learning principles.
Are there any specialized language programs (other than French) for early and middle-year students?
Yes, WSD offers language programs at:
- Brock Corydon: Hebrew Bilingual (Kindergarten to Grade 6)
- Earl Grey: Spanish bilingual (Kindergarten to Grade 8)
- École Stanley Knowles School: Punjabi bilingual (Nursery to Grade 8)
- Isaac Brock: Cree and Anishinaabemowin language (Nursery to Grade 8)
- Niji Mahkwa: Indigenous cultural and language school (Nursery to Grade 8)
- Meadows West: Filipino bilingual (Nursery to Grade 8)

WSD offers enriched academic and athletic programs at:
- École Kelvin High School: International Baccalaureate (IB) Program for Grades 10 to 12.
- Daniel McIntrye Collegiate Institute: Advanced Placement (AP) Program for Grades 9 to 12.
- Grant Park High School: Advanced Placement (AP) Program for Grades 9 to 12.
- École secondaire Sisler High School: Advanced Placement (AP) Program for Grades 9 to 12.
- Collège Churchill High School for Hockey and Softball Academies at Grades 7 to 12.
Are entrance exams required for my child to join specialized programs?
No, entrance exams are not required for any program. All learners are welcome to register for the program of their choice, such as French Immersion, Vocational, International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), or other language programs. Families are encouraged to review and understand the program's expectations before enrolling.
