On March 21, 2024, École Garden Grove School buzzed with excitement as it hosted the Divisional French Speaking Contest, known as the Concours d'art oratoire, for Grades 3 to 8 French Immersion students. This annual event drew in 70 talented participants from across 14 of Winnipeg School Division’s French Immersion schools who showcased their linguistic prowess in various categories including Early Immersion, Late Immersion, Duo, and Francophone.
The atmosphere was electrifying as students took to the stage, demonstrating remarkable fluency and eloquence in their presentations. Despite the nerve-wracking experience of speaking in front of an audience, each participant delivered their speeches with confidence and poise, leaving the audience in awe.
Scarlett, a bright third-grader, shared her enthusiasm for the event, stating, "I love presenting in front of my peers, my teacher, and my school in French." Her sentiments echoed those of many students who found joy in expressing themselves in the language they've been diligently studying.
Zia, an eighth-grader seasoned in the art of oratory, expressed her love for the speech-writing process, stating, "I've been participating in the concours for a couple of years now and each time I just love the speech-writing process. It's the whole process of every individual step coming together in the end of that one performance. Even if I'm nervous and mess up, it's still just an amazing experience for me."
The Divisional French Speaking Contest serves as a platform for French immersion students across the division to showcase their linguistic talents and celebrate their dedication to mastering the French language. It is not merely a competition but a rich learning experience that fosters the improvement of French linguistic competencies and boosts confidence in French speaking.
As the event concluded with thunderous applause, the winners were announced, each deserving of recognition for their outstanding performances. These winners will now advance to the provincials, scheduled to take place May 4, at St. Boniface University.
The Divisional French Speaking Contest not only highlights the linguistic achievements of students but also instills in them a sense of pride and accomplishment, motivating them to continue their journey towards French proficiency with zeal and enthusiasm.
