Bilingual Programming


In bilingual programming schools, the target language is used as the language of instruction for not more than 50% of the school day. In Kindergarten, the target language is used 100% of the time. The entry points for bilingual programming schools are Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Cree, Filipino, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Ojibwe and Spanish are all offered in Winnipeg School Division bilingual programming schools. The second language is used for instruction about 50% of the school day. In Kindergarten it is used 100% of the time.

Students in bilingual programming receive all the same curriculum as English only schools, with the added benefit of learning Language Arts, Social Studies and other subjects in the second language. English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science are taught in English.

Heritage and Ancestral Languages – are single subject courses currently offered in Winnipeg School Division as follows:

  • Ojibwe – Children of the Earth, Niji Mahkwa

Q. Will my child develop and maintain strong English language skills?
A. Mathematics, Science and English Language Arts are taught in English in bilingual language programming. In addition, studying in bilingual language programming develops skills in communication, expressive language, critical thinking, grammar and vocabulary.

Q. Is there an extra cost for my child to attend bilingual language programming?
A. No. All Winnipeg School Division residents are entitled to enroll in any of the five bilingual programming with no extra costs attached to the program.

Q. We don’t live close to the school that offers the bilingual programming our child is interested in — how will they get there?
A. Transportation is provided free of charge to all WSD bilingual programming students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 if they live more than 1.6 km from the school (applies only to students living within Winnipeg School Division boundaries).

Q. How do I register my child for bilingual programming?
A. Call your school and set up a registration appointment. Remember to bring the following documents for registration:

  • Manitoba Medical card listing the child and parent(s) name or other medical card listing the child and parent(s) name from another province.
  • Proof of residence.
  • Your child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate, certificate of live birth, statutory declaration, Canadian Passport or Treaty Card.
  • Legal guardians are required to provide a Court of Queen’s Bench document signed by a judge.
  • Non-citizens are required to provide one of the following:
    • Landed Immigrant  (permanent residence) documents
    • Work Visa
    • Study Visa
    • Refugee Status

 Note: if you have none of the above but have made application for permanent residency, you are considered a visitor and therefore must pay and have health medical coverage.
