Enrichment and Science

The Enrichment and Science Department for Winnipeg School Division supports learning for all students across the division. Program Leads and Support Teachers work collaboratively with schools to provide innovative programming and services in the area of Arts, Sciences, and Enrichment. 

Inner City Science Centre

Located in Niji Mahkwa in WSD, this high technology science laboratory develops the academic and laboratory skills of both teachers and students in the division.  

STEAM Centres

The STEAM Enrichment Centre classrooms invite students from across WSD to participate in an experiential learning program focusing on excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math Education.

Winnipeg Schools' Science Fair

The Winnipeg Schools' Science Fair is an annual regional science fair associated with the Canada-Wide Science Fair and the Youth Science Foundation. Participation is restricted to those students in Grades 4 to 12, through participating schools in Winnipeg School Division.

Biomedical Youth Program

Organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences, College of Medicine this includes such programs as Science Buddies, & Mentorships Clubs, BYP Summer Camps and on-site high school program experience.

Young Scientists Program at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre

This program is an initiative at the St-Boniface Hospital Research Centre Youth BIOlab for elementary students in Winnipeg School Division with a strong aptitude and interest in science.

WHERE Challenge

The WHERE Challenge is a national contest endorsed by the Canadian Earth sciences community that asks students aged 9 to 14 years to discover the answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from? WHERE stands for the places where Earth scientists work: Water, Hazards, Energy, Resources, and Environment.

Manitoba Schools Science Symposium (MSSS)

The largest annual science event held for students throughout Manitoba. MSSS is held the final week of April at the University of Manitoba and is open to all students from grades 4 to 12. 

Invent an Alien (MSSS)

Give students the opportunity to use a wide range of educational skills such as researching, planning, implementing the plan, brainstorming, interviewing, creative thinking, presenting and building with their choice of materials (Grades 4 and up, French & English).

Exploravision

ExploraVision is a science competition that goes beyond the typical student science competition and into what it takes to bring ideas to reality. A teacher will sponsor and lead his/her students as they work in groups of 2 – 4 to simulate real research and development. The students pick a current technology, research it, envision what it might look like in 20 years, and describe the development steps, pros & cons, and obstacles. (K-12) 

Manitoba Robot Games 

After building their robotic creations, students compete against one another at an annual event at Tec Voc each March.

WISE Kid-Netic Energy

A non-profit organization that offers hands on, curriculum based science, engineering and technology deliverables for youth in Kindergarten to Grade 12. 

AAIM Day

Each year, approximately 700 Grade 6 students participate in the annual Aerospace and Aviation in Manitoba (AAiM) Day held at Red River College. This mini symposium is designed to let students participate in hands-on activities that focus on four major aspects of the aerospace and aviation sectors: Repair/Overhaul, Manufacturing/Composites, Space and Flight.

Spaghetti Bridge Building  

Students design and build bridges using only regular spaghetti and white or wood glue. It is then tested to destruction to see which bridge withstands the most weight.

Rube Goldberg Machines 

Students use every-day objects to create a Rube Goldberg MachineTM and integrate as many recycled items as possible. RGMC encourages teamwork and out-of-the-box problem solving for students age 11 and up.

Freeze Frame 

Provides educational opportunities for young people to explore the art of filmmaking and multimedia. It offers workshops, projects, festivals, and video contests.

MYRCA

The Manitoba Young Reader’s Choice Awards aims to promote reading and Canadian Literature by giving young people the opportunity to vote for their favourite Canadian book from an annual list.

Quantam Arts

The Quantum Arts Program is run by WSD and funded by the Children’s Heritage Fund. It gives students the opportunity to work with professional actors, dancers and artists at one of three organizations: Prairie Theatre Exchange, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.  

Concours d’art oratoire

An annual French public-speaking event for schools throughout the province. Classroom, school and then board-level competitions lead to the provincial competition, which is held at l’Université de Saint-Boniface. It is open to students from Grades 3 to 12 and includes the categories of Early Immersion, Late Immersion, Core French, Core Extended French, Français and Impromptu.

Red River Heritage Fair

The Red River Heritage Fair encourages students in Grade 4 to 11 to explore Canadian heritage in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Students use the medium of their choice to tell stories about Canadian heros, legends, milestones, and achievements - and present the results of their research at a public exhibition and learning conference. Projects may be presented in English or French.

Thin Air Winnipeg International Writer’s Festival

A weeklong event in September which showcases writers from Canada and around the world for a week of readings, lectures, interviews, conversations, book launches, and other events which includes programming for aspiring young authors, in both English and French.

Artists in the Schools

The Manitoba Arts Council offers opportunity to bring together the vision and energy of professional artists with the creative potential of students and teachers within schools.

Circus Camp

C.A.M.P. stands for the Circus And Magic Partnership - a series of social circus arts programs for youth. 

UNESCO

Canadian schools that join the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network make a commitment to support the ideals of UNESCO, through four pillars of learning and four themes of study, in order to contribute to a local, national and global culture of peace. 

Galileo Educational Network Math Fair

A non-competitive problem-solving event that gives teachers an opportunity to have their students do problem solving with a particular goal in mind. There are numerous problems for teachers and students to use for Math Fairs and general classroom use.

Manitoba Scholastic Chess Association

An organization that aims to ensure that students in Manitoba have an opportunity to play chess and offers information about provincial tournaments, events, tips etc.

Destination Imagination

A challenge program that encourages teams of learners of from Grade 3 to 12 to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. The program consists of longer term team challenges as well as a variety of instant challenges. There is also an early learning program for primary students. 

Renzulli Learning System

A web based and personalized learning system that helps teachers differentiate instruction. It promotes inquiry based learning and engaging projects for students based on their own individual learning styles, strengths and interests (all grades, license required)

MENSA for Kids

Sponsored by the MENSA foundation, this site offers a variety of resources for students, teachers and parents of students in need of enrichment. Learning opportunities focused on "Excellence in Reading", TED Talks, poetry, games, and critical thinking activities are provided.

University of Winnipeg High School Enrichment Program

For one week each Spring Manitoba high school students will have the opportunity to be on The University of Winnipeg campus. This program is designed to introduce exceptional students to the possibilities and advantages of higher education.

Skills Manitoba

Offers Manitoba's programs for Skills Canada competitions and programs including engaging hands-on learning opportunities to youth across the province. These programs include Cardboard Boat Race, Extreme Sledding, Model Wind Turbine Competition, Young Women’s Conferences, and Skills Competitions.
