Physical Education

July 14, 2022

The physical education program is designed to allow students to develop competencies by progressing through specific levels of activities. The components of the program are: technical skills, theory and practical application.

Students participate in physical education classes, in inter-room sports, and in inter-school activities. The underlying philosophy of the phys ed. program is to enhance a healthy, active, and positive lifestyle.

Any students with injuries and/or illness are to be reported to their teacher and/or coach to arrange total or partial exemption depending upon the concern. A parental note, with medical support will be required if there are special circumstances and/or the condition is long term.

Elementary

The goal of physical education is for students to enjoy and value participation in physical activity. To do this students will take part in a variety of activities to help them develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for a healthy and active lifestyle.

All Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will complete the Elementary Assessment Program. They will be assessed on transport skills (running, jumping, hopping, galloping, and skipping), manipulative skills (rolling, bouncing, catching, throwing, striking, and kicking), and balance skills (static and dynamic).

Throughout the year, students will participate in fitness activities, low-organized and co-operative games, gross motor activities, dance, rhythmic/gymnastic activities, outdoor winter activities, and a variety of sport specific games. These games are categorized as net/wall games (ie. volleyball, badminton, tennis), target games (ie. bowling), striking/fielding (ie. softball), and territory/invasion games (ie. soccer, basketball, football, ultimate football).

Junior and Senior High

The physical education program at Sargent Park School provides all students with the opportunity to enjoy a variety of individual and team activities. Students are encouraged to learn and develop new skills, work co-operatively with others, and strive for the highest level of personal fitness. These experiences will enhance and encourage students to live an active, healthy lifestyle.
