WSD students set to showcase musical skills

May 19, 2021
Sistema Spring Family Night

Sistema Winnipeg presents the Michael Nozick Spring Family Night concert on May 31 at 6:30 p.m. The virtual event will stream via Sistema’s YouTube channel

Sistema is a partnership between the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, WSD and Seven Oaks School Division. In its 10th year, the after-school program provides free musical training to students every day, with participants starting in Grade 2 and continuing until their high school graduation.

WSD’s Sistema program is based out of King Edward Community School, with training also happening at Isaac Newton School and St. John’s High School.

The concert, which was originally scheduled for May 20, will feature separate and joint performances by students aged seven to 17 in Sistema’s Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven and Dvořák orchestras.

“When the sudden change to remote learning was announced, we were unsure if, or when, we would be able to proceed with this virtual concert as the recording sessions were scheduled for the two last days of in-person instruction and the first day of remote learning,” said Brent Johnson, WSO’s education, Sistema and community engagement manager.

“We were pleasantly surprised to see that attendance those first two afternoons was really good, a trend we have seen all year in Sistema, and so we were able to proceed with recording nearly everything we hoped to capture. Once we had worked with our team to launch our remote learning implementation of Sistema, our team was able to turn to producing this virtual concert, delayed just 10 days.”

The concert is free, but donations to Sistema Winnipeg are encouraged. Donations can be made here.

“While this year has been different and challenging in many ways, it has also been an opportunity for our team and for the Sistema students to showcase their resilience and creativity,” Johnson said.
