As our first term comes to an end, it would be good to look back and think about what we have accomplished. With math, we have completed a unit on time and our place value unit. The students did well with both of these units and are ready to start using the knowledge they learned in the place value unit to learn new strategies for addition and subtraction.
In ELA, we published a nonfiction piece of writing and learned how to write a book review. Students have also begun to look at goal setting for reading. In December we will be working on our poetry unit, and we plan to have a published poem by the beginning of winter break.
With science we are finishing up our unit on light. We have done many experiments with lasers, UV lights, and shadows. We have one big activity day coming up in December where students will get to use the lasers and lights to complete activities that they can describe using the knowledge they have learned in this unit.
For social studies we worked hard at learning about ourselves and then discovering Canada. The students are currently working on a research project focusing on a chosen province or territory. In December we will be putting this research together in a newspaper for the classroom.
We did a few art activities as well at the end of October and into November. For Halloween the students learned about the Day of the Dead. On the last day of October the students designed and painted their own Day of the Dead masks on mannequin heads. For Remembrance Day, our focus was peace and after learning about how Canada works towards helping keep peace in the world, we made peace signs using watercolors on canvas.
I look forward to lots of learning in the second term as well. Keep up the attendance and remember to dress warm.
