Clifton School celebrates 75th anniversary with community gathering

June 3, 2025 News Story
Clifton School students gave entertaining dance and choir performances at the 75th Anniversary celebrations.

A historic milestone brought together generations of students to mark Clifton School’s 75th anniversary. Students, families, staff, and alumni filled the school during a recent Family Celebration evening celebration to honour the West End elementary school’s rich history and to showcase student learning.

The evening began with brief speeches and song, and continued with classroom visits, during which students proudly shared their decade-specific research projects. The evening even welcomed notable alumni, including local radio personality Joe Aiello, who shared stories of his school days at Clifton.

"Walking through these halls again brings back so many memories," Aiello told the crowd. "The lessons I learned here shaped who I became."

"Once you are a Clifton kid, you are always a Clifton kid!" said Antonio Di Geronimo, a long-serving Clifton teacher. "Our school is multi-generational, with many parents having attended Clifton School as well."

This family connection builds a strong sense of belonging throughout the school community. For the event, the school was transformed, with areas decorated to represent different decades from its 75-year history.

In the gymnasium, classrooms took turns performing dances during their assigned historical periods. These performances delighted spectators who watched children bring the past to life through music and movement.

Another highlight of the celebration included opening time capsules from the 50th and 60th anniversaries. Students eagerly read letters written by former pupils from years past.

"Reading words from students who sat in these same classrooms decades ago was powerful," said Sarah Luhowy, who guided the students through their historical exploration. "It created a tangible link between generations."

After examining these artifacts, current students wrote letters to their future selves. These messages will be sealed in a new time capsule, continuing the school's tradition.

The anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the land where Clifton School is situated. Students embarked on a journey to understand the area's Indigenous history.

"Long before our school was built, this land was home to thriving Indigenous Nations," explained Principal Leanne Chernetz. "They lived in relationship with the land and with each other for thousands of years."

Each class created their own Land Acknowledgement as part of this learning process. This work helped students build a deeper relationship with Mother Earth and understand their responsibility to care for the land.

Salena Starling, Clifton's former student, CEO and President for Community of Big Hearts and global voice for Indigenous youth, addressed the gathering. Her powerful message reminded everyone of the importance of honouring the past while building a better future.

The school has committed to continuing this work by listening to more stories from Indigenous People about the land Clifton occupies. The spirit of Clifton School remains as strong as ever after 75 remarkable years.
